Why I built it

I wanted a memory box that didn't need a drawer.

I'm a dad. My kids draw faster than I can find fridge space, and every few months I'd hit the same moment: a pile of paper on the kitchen table, and a decision I hated making. Keep it and lose the drawer, or bin it and lose the drawing.

I binned one once. My daughter noticed. That's the whole origin story.

So I built the thing I actually wanted — a digital memory box. Every drawing, kept safely, in my pocket, for good.

The part where a drawing comes to life came later, and it's the bit my kids love most — watching the dragon they invented actually move. But it was never the point. The point was not losing anything.

That's why keeping your art is free and always will be. A memory box you have to pay rent on isn't a memory box. If you ever want to walk away, one tap gives you every drawing as ordinary photo files, and I hope you never need it.

The questions I'd ask.

If scanning is free, what's the catch?

There isn't one. Scanning, organising, exporting and backup are free and always will be. You only pay if you choose to turn a drawing into a photo or an animation — because those cost me real money every time, and nothing else does. That's the entire business model.

Doesn't AI ruin the point of a child's drawing?

It would if it replaced it. It doesn't. The original is stored exactly as they drew it, permanently, and it's the first thing you see — the generated version sits beside it as an extra you can delete. Nothing is ever altered or overwritten. If you never tap the button, the app is simply a place your kid's art is safe.

Are you training AI on my children's drawings?

No. Nothing leaves your phone unless you tap generate or switch on backup. If you turn on backup it goes to your own Google Drive, in a private folder only this app can see. There is no Lively Art server holding your family's artwork.

What happens if the app disappears? Or if you do?

Nothing happens to your library. Lively Art runs entirely on your phone — the scanning, the galleries, the search, all of it — with no server behind it and no account to expire. There is nothing for me to switch off. If I stopped working on this tomorrow, the copy on your phone would keep running exactly as it does today, for as long as your phone does.

The only parts that need me are the two AI buttons, because those call a server. Those would stop. Your drawings wouldn't.

And if you ever want them out of the app entirely, "Download all" exports the whole library as ordinary photo files, foldered by child and named by title and date. No lock-in, no export fee, no account required — just your files, on your computer, in a format anything can open.

Will there ever be a subscription?

Not for keeping your art. That's a promise I'm making in public so you can hold me to it.
